Kelly Simmons Dozier was honored as one of the Tallahassee Democrat's 25 Women You Need to Know in 2010, Oasis Center for Women and Girls' Trailblazer in 2010 and received the Tallahassee Democrat’s Volunteer of the Year Award in the Arts in 2008 for her work supporting the arts and her other volunteer efforts for the community.  In 2008 Kelly was also recognized by President George Bush and awarded the President’s Call to Service Award for outstanding volunteer efforts.

Kelly was born Carmel Iris Simmons in Tel-Aviv, Israel and lived there until 7 years old when her family moved to Tallahassee.  For most of her childhood, summers were spent in Israel. 

Experience & Education

After graduating from Leon High School in Tallahassee, Kelly attended Florida State University, completing her studies by age 19.  She earned Bachelor degrees in Psychology and Communications for Business with an extensive minor in Business.  After a year working at the University of Florida personnel department, Kelly returned to FSU and earned a Masters degree in Interior Design.

In 1985 Kelly joined Mad Dog Design and Construction Company in Tallahassee and for over 10 years, Kelly was the Design Director designing custom homes and serving as Project Manager on over 200 residential projects.  In 1993 she began to manage the administrative end of the company and became a partner and Senior Vice President in 1995.  Kelly is currently Co-Owner and General Manager of Mad Dog Construction.

Community Service

Kelly has served as Chair of the Lively Technical Center’s School Advisory Council, President of the Tallahassee Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction, served as the Leon County representative of Workforce Development Board (now Workforce Plus), served on as co-chair of Whole Child Leon 2005-2007, is currently a member of the board of the Community Foundation of North Florida, Past President of LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts Board of Directors 2007-2009, a member of the Whole Child Leadership Council, a member of the United Way of the Big Bend’s Community Investment and Agency Relations Committee, a member of Zonta International and a Village Square Founder. 

Kelly married her husband Laurie in 1989 and together they enjoy working on home and garden improvement projects and spending time with friends and family.  Kelly has a teenage daughter, Danielle, who is a third generation graduate of Leon High School attending college at University of West Florida.  The family is politically active working for the enhancement and preservation of the environment and improved quality of life in Tallahassee.
